PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required to start reading of an image. SOLUTION: An image sensor 12 is provided with a plurality of photoelectric transducers 22, 22 and so forth which are provided so as to be arranged on a straight line, a switching element 62 for turning on/off between each of the photoelectric transducers 22 and an output signal line 63, a resolution switching signal generating section 64 for generating resolution switching signals U1, U2 for representing resolutions instructed by the number of clock pulse signals CLK during a period when a start signal SP is in a high level, and a shift register 68 for controlling and turning on/off the switching elements 62, 62 and so on so that an image is read with the resolutions represented by the signals U1, U2. According to this configuration, since the instruction of the resolution using the start signal SP and the clock pulse signal CLK can be performed without changing the pulse width of the start signal SP, the time required for starting to read an image can be shortened.
