A system (10) and a method for detecting, locating and identifying incidents of approaching a linear installation that includes plurality of sensing units positions (20) in an array along the length of the linear installation, at a distance one from each other, wherein each unit comprises at least one sensor for sensing seismic or acoustic interference or noise and the issuance of a suiting indicating signal; and signal processing means for analyzing said signal and comparing it to a cache of seismic or acoustic interference or noise signatures that is embedded in said sensor unit (30) and communications means for transferring data from said sensor unit (30) to a distant command and control center (30).
