PURPOSE: A system and method for automatically controlling a set mode of a remote controller is provided so that a user can recognize the present set mode more easily or change the present set mode automatically in case that the user controls a plurality of electric appliances by using a single remote controller. CONSTITUTION: In a system for controlling an associated electric appliance according to the present set mode using a remote controller(100) capable of controlling a plurality of electric appliances, each electric appliance(200) consists of an infrared receiving part(210), a system microcomputer(220), and an infrared transmitting part(230). The remote controller(100) is comprised of an infrared receiving part(130), a remote controller microcomputer(110), and an infrared transmitting part(120). The infrared receiving part(130) receives a product code, transmitted from each electric appliance(200). The remote controller microcomputer(110) creates a code corresponding to a key signal inputted by a user or automatically changes the present set mode into a product code received at the infrared receiving part(130). The infrared transmitting part(120) transmits an infrared signal corresponding to a code created at the remote controller microcomputer(110).
