OPTICAL ATTENUATOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide type optical attenuator having a high attenuation effect of light.

SOLUTION: An optical waveguide 3 for optical attenuation is constituted of diffusion part 3a formed so that its width is gradually widened as being separated from an optical waveguide 1 for input and an attenuation part 3b intervening between the diffusion part 3a and an optical waveguide 2 for output and formed so that its width is narrowed as approaching the optical waveguide 2 for output and the attenuation part 3b is formed in an asymmetrical flat surface shape by providing a notched part 3c on one side of a width direction. The optical waveguide for optical attenuation is provided with a heater 5 for optical attenuation disposed so that a part thereof is superposed on the attenuation part 3b on the other side of the width direction of the attenuation part 3b, a heater 6 for optical diffusion disposed in a position where the heater 6 is not superposed on the attenuation part 3b and in the vicinity of the notched part 3c on the one side of the width direction of the attenuation part 3b and a heater 7 for suppressing an insert loss disposed so that a part thereof is superposed on the attenuation part 3b on the one side of the width direction of the attenuation part 3b.
