<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent performance degradation, life degradation and operation errors of an optical disk unit by suppressing the temperature of a light emitting element mounted on an optical pickup to an operation guarantee temperature or lower while controlling the number of revolution of the disk and the position of an optical pick. <P>SOLUTION: When the temperature detector of the light emitting element being a heating element detects that the temperature of the light emitting element exceeds the specified value of the upper limit of the use temperature of the light emitting element, the optical pickup is moved so that the distance from the center of the rotation of the disk to the light emitting element falls within the range of 1.0 to 1.2 times of the radius of the disk and also the number of revolution of the disk is controlled so as to become a roughly constant value within a range of 50Hz to 60Hz and moreover the supply current to the light emitting element is interrupted.
