Protection device for protecting the device control units of automats, e.g. automatic vending machines, against illegal and unauthorized access. The device comprises a plate or mat-type element of elastic plastic that is placed within the automat in front of the area to be protected. Expansions or holes caused by drilling through the plastic with a drilling tool immediately close up after withdrawal of the tool. No useful manipulation channel is created.
