PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand a color reproducing range by easy control without deteriorating luminance. SOLUTION: A first light source 21a lights up at a sub frame of a first half formed by dividing a display period of one frame into two and a second light source 21b lights up at a sub frame of a second half. Third and fourth light sources 23a and 25a light up over the display period of the one frame in parallel. Emission intensity of the first and the second light sources 21a and 21b can be made to be e.g. twice as intense as the emission intensity of the third and the fourth light sources 23a and 25a. A first liquid crystal light valve 31 takes a display state corresponding to the luminance of a projection image of a color G1 at the sub frame of the first half formed by dividing the display period into two and takes a display state corresponding to a projection image of a color G2 at the sub frame of the second half. Second and third liquid crystal light valves 33 and 35 take the states corresponding to images of colors B and R, respectively, over the display period of the one frame. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
