PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply provide a cyclopentenone derivative in a high yield while using a readily treatable reagent. SOLUTION: The method for producing the cyclopentenone derivative represented by formula (1) (R1and R2may be same or different and they are each a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group or the like) comprises reacting a metallocyclopentene represented by formula (2) (R1and R2are each the same as described above; M is a transition metal; L1and L2are each a ligand) with a transition metal carbonyl to obtain a reaction mixture and then treating the reaction mixture with iodine.
