PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PPARα-selective activated compound useful as a medicine for preventing and/or treating hyperlipemia, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, diabetic complication, inflammation, heart disease or the like not accompanying weight gain and overweight. SOLUTION: The benzoic acid derivative represented by general formula (1) [wherein, -A- is a -CH<SB>2</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>- group, a -CH=CH- group, a -CH(OH)-CH<SB>2</SB>- group or a -C(O)-CH<SB>2</SB>- group; X is an oxygen atom, an NH group or an S(O)<SB>n</SB>group (wherein, n is an integer of 0, 1 or 2)] or a salt thereof, and a medicine using the derivative or the salt thereof are provided. The medicine has an activity for selectively activating theαtype in the PPAR, and is effective as the medicine for preventing and/or treating the hyperlipemia, the arteriosclerosis, the diabetes, the diabetic complication, the inflammation, the heart disease or the like not accompanying the weight gain and the overweight.
