PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record an image having a length in the scanning direction longer than that defined by the buffer memory size. SOLUTION: When recording is performed by scanning a recording medium in the direction intersecting the arranging direction of recording elements by means of a carriage mounting a recording head using a plurality of recording agents of different density exhibiting additivity and arranged with a plurality of recording elements in a specified direction in correspondence with each recording agent, the recording region is divided in the scanning direction into a plurality of subregions. Depending on which one of the plurality of subregions each pixel of image data belongs to (114), image processing for representing the density of the pixel by a combination of the plurality of recording agents (115) is differentiated, image processing results are stored in a specified storage region (117) provided in correspondence with each recording agent, and recording is performed by driving the recording head according to data stored in the storage region.
