PURPOSE: A retractable zoom lens system for extending from and retracting into a main body of an optical instrument and a method for retracting the same are provided to reduce a receiving length of the retractable lens system by improving a structure of the retractable lens system. CONSTITUTION: A retractable zoom lens system(10) includes a plurality of lens groups and at least one support frame. The lens groups(L1,L2,L3) are partially arrayed along an optical axis to convert a focusing distance while a zoom lens performs a zooming operation. At least one support frame is used for supporting at least one lens group of the plural lens groups. A plane perpendicular to the optical axis extends into the support frame through at least one lens group and at least other lens group.
