Collimated laser light follows an optical path (13) from the laser connection. The deflector (14) directs it to the F-theta objective (15), to leave as a focused beam (16) incident on the target point (17.2) of the scanned surface (17.1). Light reflected and/or emitted locally from the target is returned through the F-theta objective, back along the optical path. Returned light of the first wavelength is coupled out (12) to the image processor (19) which converts it to electrical signals. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method.
