The system has an access controller with authentication element(s) (1) carried by the user, a vehicle mounted access control part (2,7) and a wireless access authorization communications channel (4). It also has an authentication element location arrangement for determining whether an authorized authentication element is outside the vehicle within the working range of the communications channel, when an access authentication checking communications process is initiated. The control part generates at least part of the control signal depending on whether the location arrangement detects the presence of an authorized authentication element in this region.
