Malleable bone composition for filling bone defects

The invention is directed toward a malleable bone composition e.g. a putty or flowable gel composition, for application to a bone defect site to promote new bone growth at the site which comprises a mixture of demineralized osteogenic bone powder, in a hydrogel carrier; the bone powder having a particle size of from about 100 to about 850 microns; the bone powder comprising from about 30 to about 35% of the weight of the composition; the carrier being chitosan in an aqueous solution, the chitosan having a molecular weight ranging from one hundred thousand to three hundred thousand Daltons and ranging from 1% to 5% by weight of the carrier solution.
