The present invention relates to an intrusion detection system (IDS) and a method for controlling the same, which preemptively block an attempt to attack an in-vehicle network. For this purpose, a method for detecting an attack on a network in an attack detection system (or an IDS) of a vehicle according to an embodiment of the present invention may comprise the steps of: receiving messages of a network for a preset period; obtaining the current repetition rate for each of the received messages; receiving operation state information of a vehicle at a starting point of the period; calling a normal repetition rate, corresponding to the operation state information, for each of the messages; calculating a linearly approximated relative distance function for each of the messages by using the current repetition rate and the normal repetition rate; and determining whether an attack state is present for each of the messages by comparing a result of the calculation of the linearly approximated relative distance function with a preset threshold value.
