As shown in Fig. 3, a device for connecting sheathed cables having cores of a plastic material, e.g. sodium and its alloys, comprises an insulating housing 16 of two mating halves 18, 20 formed with cable receiving cavities and aligned bores 39, 40. A cutting device comprising a cylindrical can 38 having a bevelled cutting edge is drawn through the bores 40, 39 by turning a nut 36, cutting away and retaining in the can a part of the sheath J and core C of each cable, leaving a common void, with the closed end of the can 38 closing bore 39 and a sealing plate 48 closing the enlarged portion 41 of bore 40. A plug (50, Fig. 2, not shown) is screwed into the free end of the tap off cable (14) to extrude core material into the common void, to connect the cable cores electrically. The extrusion rate may be increased by applying a further force between the plug and the void. The mating surfaces, projections and recesses of the housing halves may be coated with a quick setting adhesive or cement. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) overlapping ends of parallel cables (58, 59) are joined, core material being extruded into the common void by a plug (72) in the free end of each cable, both ends being contained within the housing (62). In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the cables are at right angles to each other in different planes, and the housing may be enlarged (Fig. 8, not shown) to accommodate three tap off cables. Cutting members of other configurations may be used.
