PURPOSE: A system and method for sensing a passenger is provided to control the inflation of an airbag according to the existence/nonexistence and height of the passenger by detecting the position of the face of the passenger. CONSTITUTION: A system for sensing a passenger is composed of a camera(100) installed at the inside of a vehicle and observing a driver seat and the seat next to the driver simultaneously, an image processing unit(200), a control unit(300), and an airbag control unit(400). The image processing unit receives an image signal from the camera, and detects the face section of a driver or passenger through the variation of color section to measure the height of the driver or the passenger. The control unit determines the inflation of an airbag according to data about the face section and the height of the driver or passenger. The airbag control unit inflates the airbag according to the output of the control unit.
