PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for testing an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) are provided to detect defect points correctly and rapidly without using a jig. CONSTITUTION: A substrate including a plurality of signal lines(DL1,DL2,DL3,DLm-1,DLm,GL1,GL2,GLm), driving switching elements and capacitors(Cst) formed in an effective display area, at least one test line(401,402,405) and at least one test switching element connected to the test line, which are formed in an area surrounding the effective display area, is loaded in a test apparatus. Light is irradiated on the test switching element to turn on the test switching element and a test voltage is supplied to the test line to charge the capacitors with the test voltage. The light is irradiated on the test switching element to turn on the test switching element such that the voltage of the capacitors is provided to the test line to read the voltage of the capacitors, to thereby detect a defect in one of the driving switching elements and capacitors.
