<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which has a simple constitution, a high contrast and greatly improved gradation inversion, in particular, a TN type liquid crystal display device, and an optical compensation sheet for realizing the above properties. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a pair of polarizing plates arranged outside a liquid crystal layer which has a twisted structure and is provided between substrates each of that has an electrode at least on one surface and which are arranged opposite to each other. The polarizing plate consists of a polarizing film and a protection film, and the protection film provided on the liquid crystal layer side is formed of an optical compensation sheet. The optical compensation sheet is formed of a compound having discotic structure units, and the compound having the discotic structure units is aligned. Alignment mean directions on the adjacent polarizing film side where molecule long axes constitute the discotic structure units cross each other between the upper and lower optical compensation sheets, and the angle of intersection is smaller than the angle of intersection of the pair of polarizing plates. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
