PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve efficiency of scavenging air by reducing reverse flow of exhaust gas to a scavenging air port side in a two cycle internal combustion engine constructed to communicate an exhaust port 8 to a cylinder first when a piston 5 in the cylinder 3 approaches vicinity of bottom dead center and then opening a scavenging air port 6. SOLUTION: This engine is provided with a temperature sensor 11, an oxygen concentration sensor or an exhaust gas sensor at the scavenging air port 6 and reverse flow of exhaust gas is detected. Difference between pressure in the cylinder and pressure of intake air is reduced by advancing timing of opening an exhaust valve 9 in an exhaust port, increasing pressure of intake air in the scavenging air port or reducing pressure in the cylinder according to the exhaust gas reverse flow detection.
