PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chromate treatment method for forming a protective film having high safety and excellent corrosion resistance by enhancing the adhesion property of the chromate film and metallic steel products with the chromate film. SOLUTION: In the tervalent chromate treatment method to be applied to the surface of the zinc coated or galvanized steel, the surface is previouosly subjected flash treatment by an alkali metal etc., then to first heat treatment and thereafter the surface is subjected to immersion into a tervalent chromate treating agent to form the chromate film, thence the surface is subjected rapid cooling after second heat treatment.
