PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus for carrying out smoothing effectively even when the image edge pixel extends to the edge line of the image region. SOLUTION: When an image edge pixel included in image data is a pixel which constitutes the edge line of an image region, a pixel W out of the edge line of the image region is anticipated. From the anticipated pixel W, whether the image edge pixel extends inside the image region or not is determined through an image edge pixel I(m, n) which constitutes the edge line of the image region. When the image edge pixel extends inside the image region, pixels W1 to W3 outside the edge line of the image region, together with the image edge pixel, are fed to a smoothing processing unit.
