PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an insolubilized polyvinyl alcohol fiber assembly not using aldehydes, free from fear of toxicity and carcinogenicity, scarcely causing dissolution by moisture, etc. and being applicable to various uses and to provide a method for producing the fiber assembly. SOLUTION: In the insolubilized polyvinyl alcohol fiber assembly, insolubilized polyvinyl alcohol fibers in which polyvinyl alcohol is insolubilized byα-hydroxy acid are assembled. The fiber assembly has≤4% weight reduction ratio after immersion in boiled water. The insolubilized polyvinyl alcohol fiber assembly can be produced by (1) a step for preparing a dissolved liquid obtained by dissolving polyvinyl alcohol andα-hydroxy acid, (2) a step for forming the polyvinyl alcohol fiber assembly by assembling the polyvinyl alcohol fiber spun by using the dissolved liquid and (3) a step for insolubilizing the fiber assembly so that weight reduction ratio after immersion in boiled water becomes≤4% by heating the polyvinyl alcohol fiber assembly.
