PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tetramethylbiphenyl-type high-performance epoxy resin useful for electric and electronic fields and the like, and to provide a method for producing the high-performance epoxy resin composition. SOLUTION: The method for producing the tetramethylbiphenyl type epoxy resin composition containing≤0.3 wt.% tetramethyldiphenoquinone comprises reacting 4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl containing≤0.3 wt.% tetramethyldiphenoquinone with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali metal compound.
