Metal-interacting amphiphilic compounds (I) are new. Amphiphilic compounds of formula (I) are new. X-Y-L-(W-Z) n(I) X : a terminal group capable of undergoing strong chemical and/or physical interactions with metal surfaces, selected from acid groups or their salts or hydrolyzable Si-containing groups; Y : a 5-60C hydrocarbon group comprising linearly linked units of the same type; n : 1-3; L : S, SS, COO, OCO, CONR 1>, OCONR 1>, NR 1>COO, NR 1>CONR 1>, NR 1>, N, NR 1>CR 1>, CON, NR 1>CON, CONR 1>CR 1>, NR 1>C, NR 1>CH 2C, OC, OCH 2C, CONR 1>CH 2C, COOC or COOCH 2C; R 1>H or 1-4C alkyl; W : a hydrophilic group; Z : a (non)reactive terminal group; provided that X is not COOH when L is COO. Independent claims are also included for: (1) composition for treating metal surfaces, comprising at least one compound (I) and a solvent; (2) composite comprising a metal layer, a layer comprising at least one compound (I) and another layer.
