PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat cathode-ray tube capable of improving withstand voltage characteristic by preventing the dielectric breakdown of a space retainer without promoting discharge or making the assembling difficult. SOLUTION: This flat cathode-ray tube comprises the space retainer 1, an anode substrate, a fluorescent surface, a cathode substrate 5, an electron emitting material layer 6a, a wire 6b, a control electrode 7, and a shielding electrode 9. Electrons released by the electric field concentrated to a conductor-insulator connection part are moved on the surface of the space retainer 1 toward the anode substrate, as shown by the actual line arrow, by a high potential applied to the anode substrate or a high potential induced on the surface of the space retainer 1. Since the shielding electrode 9 is arranged through a narrow gap 12 with the space retainer 1, even if electrons as collide with the space retainer 1, as shown by the dotted line arrow, to generate secondary electrons are released, they can be absorbed into the shielding electrode 9 before collision with the space retainer 1.
