PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lightweight cylindrical pressure vessel formed of steel in which the pressure hardly leaks. SOLUTION: In a method for working a cylindrical pressure vessel, a steel pipe 2' is chucked by a drive chuck 12b on one end of a rotary shaft of a spinning machine, the pipe 2' is rotated around the axis thereof, and a contraction-thickened portion 2b' is formed on a part of the pipe member 2' by moving the pipe in the axial direction while pressing an outer circumferential surface of the pipe 2' by a spinning means 14 in a state in which the compressive force is applied to the pipe member 2' in the axial direction by a pressing means 13.
