CATALYSTS AND PROCESSES FOR PRODUCTION OF POLYMERS

The invention provides novel catalysts and novel processes for the production of polymers with the same. Specifically, a catalyst comprising mesoporous silica and a copper (II) compound supported on the silica, wherein the copper (II) compound may be coordinated to a diamine; a catalyst obtained by making a copper compound supported on mesoporous silica by the use of a copper (I) compound as the starting material, wherein the copper compound may be coordinated to a diamine; a catalyst obtained by bonding a diamine to mesoporous silica and coordinating a copper compound to the diamine; and a process for the production of polymers which comprises conducting oxidative coupling polymerization of a phenolic monomer with a catalyst comprising mesoporous silica and a copper compound supported thereon, wherein an amine may be added in conducting the oxidative coupling polymerization or the polymerization may be conducted in an oxygen-containing atmosphere.
