摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for permanently splicing two optical fibers. <P>SOLUTION: In permanently splicing two optical fibers 1, 1', the ends of the fibers 1, 1' are placed opposite to each other on the surface and then fusion-spliced by an electric arc generated between two electrodes 5. For the purpose of obtaining prescribed lateral displacement of the outer surface of these fibers, the ends of these fibers are arranged, before melt sticking, at a position having displacement beyond the required displacement. At the time of the fusion welding, a current with a high strength is flowed between the electrodes 5, in which case the lateral displacement of a first group decreases because of the surface tension. After the melt sticking, the electric arc is continuously generated with decreasing intensity, by which temperature drops in the permanently spliced area of the fiber ends. At this stage, the outer surface of the fiber ends are observed and, in this instance, are matched more and more by the surface tension; that is, the lateral displacement is increasingly decreased.
