PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means of confirming that a grounding line on a circuit pattern of a discharge lamp lighting device connected to a vehicle mounted battery and a metal case is securely grounding-connected through a conductive component.

SOLUTION: This is a discharge lamp lighting device constructed of a DC power source E made of a vehicle mounted battery, a DC-DC converter 5 that increases and decreases its voltage, a DC-AC converter 6 that converts the DC voltage increased or decreased to a rectangular wave voltage, and an igniter part 7 for generating a high voltage pulse for breaking down the discharge lamp 8 at starting. A detecting circuit 2a for judging whether or not the circuit ground connected to the DC power source E and the metal case 1 of the discharge lamp lighting device is electrically connected is built in the metal case 1.
