<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an address-providing method and apparatus for providing an address with consistency, even if the connection of communication networks is switched. <P>SOLUTION: The address-providing method provides an address on a communication network to each of a plurality of interface apparatuses connected to the communication network, wherein a connection opposite party can be switched, and stores each of hardware identifiers of at least the two interface apparatuses connected via the communication network in cross reference with each other. The cross reference of the hardware identifiers is updated in response to the switching of the communication network, and an address in compliance with the communication protocol of the communication network is set to each of the interface apparatuses whose cross reference is updated. The address-providing apparatus executes the such a method.
