PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member with a coating having high friction coefficient and superior wear resistance, formed on the surface of a base material with surface treatment. SOLUTION: Reactive gas is introduced at certain intervals into a vacuum tank of an arc ion plating device. Metal layers 3 and compound layers 4 formed of metal nitride, carbide or carbonitride are alternately layered on the surface of the base material 1. During forming the metal layer 3, metal droplets 5 spread from an arc point are diffused into the coating 2 so that the droplets 5 are functioned as adhesive particles to other materials.
