A semiconductor laser amplifier comprises input (14) and output (16) facets coupled to an extending semiconductor sandwich of an optically active layer (28) and boundary layers (26,30) with electrical contact regions (12,32) having a narrowing pre-amplification section (20) on the input side and a broadening main output side. An independent claim is also included for a laser system comprising the above.
