<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary shaft seal having excellent durability to restrict the generation of abrasion in a contact surface part of a seal member even if the pressure of the sealing fluid is high. <P>SOLUTION: This rotary shaft seal is provided with a rubber lip part 15 having the contact surface part 16 to be brought in contact with a surface of a rotary shaft 20. A cross sectional shape of the contact surface part 16 of the lip part 15 in the free condition is smoothly formed into an arc with two arcs having different R radius R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>from each other.
