PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent leak in an electric motor while restraining any increase in manufacturing cost of a vapor compression refrigerator. SOLUTION: In this vapor compression refrigerator, when the quantity of a liquid phase refrigerant staying in a motor housing is a predetermined quantity or more, the electric motor 21b is operated at a predetermined rotational frequency during designated time. Thus, the liquid phase refrigerant having a small electric insulation resistance value staying in the motor housing 21c is quickly discharged to the outside of the motor housing 21c to fill the interior of the motor housing 21c with a gas phase refrigerant having a large electric insulation resistance value. Further, high electric insulating property can be obtained without any increase in quantity of moisture absorbent or coating of resin applied to an electric part (a stator 21e) in the motor housing 21c, so that while any increase in manufacturing cost of the vapor compression refrigerator 20 is restrained, leak in the electric motor 21b can be prevented.
