PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide construction in a premix, compression and self-ignition type internal combustion engine, which improves ignitionability at a low load side and expands an operating range to the low load side without largely deteriorating efficiency. SOLUTION: The construction is such that a time period in which an intake valve 14 and a discharge valve 15 are both closed is set from a discharge stroke to an intake stroke and a part of burned gas is mixed with premixed air-fuel mixture for a next cycle. A preheat means (glow plug) 24 is provided for heating a part of the premixed air-fuel mixture, which is in a condition of being mixed with EGR gas in a combustion chamber, above a self-ignition temperature of fuel.
