<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for measurement, by which the amount of floatation of a rotor from a stator and the axial play of the rotor can be measured with accuracy and with high reproducibility. <P>SOLUTION: A motor is driven at a predetermined rotational speed for measurement, and the relative position is measured between the rotor and the stator in the axial direction. Subsequently, when the motor is at a stop, the rotor is moved to a first abutting position relative to the stator, and the relative position is measured between the rotor and the stator in the axial direction. Further, the rotor is moved to a second abutting position, located opposite the first abutting position relative to the stator, and the relative position is measured between the rotor and the stator in the axial direction.
