PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device which is small in size and light in weight, has low transmission loss, is manufactured at a low cost and made suitable for an optical front end. SOLUTION: An optical transmitting and receiving unit (the optical device) 10 is provided with an approximately rectangular parallelepiped base member 11 to which a through-hole 13 is formed to insert and to fix an optical fiber 12. A monitor light receiving element 16 is mounted on a side surface 11c of the member 11 and a main light receiving element 17 is mounted on the other side surface 11d of the member 11.
