PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer that automatically switches application energy to one suitable for a printing method by judging a thermal transfer method or a thermal method based on combination of non-attachment of an ink ribbon and a kind of a label. SOLUTION: This thermal printer comprises a first detecting means 10 for discriminating a kind of a label of a label continuous material, a printing section having a thermal head 4 for applying desired application energy to the label continuous material and a platen roller, a second detecting means 15 for discriminating a kind of an ink ribbon, a ribbon end detecting sensor 32 for detecting the end of the ink ribbon, a first memory means 23 for storing the discriminated kind of the label or the ribbon, a second memory means 30 for storing the desired application energies corresponding to the respective kinds of the label and the ribbon, and a control section 2 that allows the thermal head 4 to perform the printing operation based on the desired application energy stored in the second memory means 30.
