PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily determine whether the cause of dropout occurring on a magnetic tape 12 is permanent one or temporary one without accurately measuring a recording and reproducing position on the magnetic tape 12. SOLUTION: After recording and reproducing of a reference signal S1 for the magnetic tape 12 are repeated by a plurality of times and detected data consisting of binary data columns 24 is obtained, first data processing in which time bases of each detected data are made coincident and second data processing in which sum of each bit of the detected data is obtained and it is determined whether a kind of dropout is permanent one or not are performed.
