PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air compressor which generates less noise when air consumption quantity is less, and which quickly transfers to high speed rotation in a case of consuming mass quantity of air in short time. SOLUTION: This air compressor for an air tool comprises a tank part to store compression air to be used for the air tool, a compression air generating part to generate compression air to be supplied to the tank part, a drive part having a motor to drive the compression air generating part, and a control circuit part to control the drive part. It is provided with a pressure sensor to detect pressure of the compression air in the tank part. The control circuit part determines a pressure change ratioΔP1/ΔT1 of pressure in the tank part in relatively short timeΔT1, and a pressure change ratioΔP2/ΔT2 of pressure in the tank part in timeΔT2 that is longer thanΔT1 based on detection signals of the pressure sensor, and controls rotation speed of the motor in a plurality of stages in accordance with the pressure change ratio.
