PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas barrier plastic film excellent in gas barrier properties and capable of preventing the damage and peeling of an amorphous carbon coating film. SOLUTION: The gas barrier plastic film is composed of a plastic film 3 equipped with the amorphous carbon coating film 2 having a carbon skeleton formed by plasma CVD as a principal compound and having an oxygen permeability of 20×10<SP>-5</SP>ml/day/cm<SP>2</SP>or below and the plastic film 4 integrally laminated on the plastic film 3. The coating film 2 contains 40-55 mol % of carbon and 45-60 mol % of hydrogen. The ratio of the number of nitrogen atoms to the number of carbon atoms of 100 contained in the coating film 2 is 15 or below, the ratio of the number of oxygen atoms is 20 or below and the ratio of the sum total of the number of nitrogen atoms and the number of oxygen atoms is 27 or less. The coating film 2 has a thickness of 0.007-0.08μm. A starting raw material is based on acetylene and the plastic films 3 and 4 comprise a polyester, a polyamide or a polyolefin.
