A fuel cell with a cold start comprises at least one electrode/electrolyte unit and flow module for process gases and coolant. The cell connects to an external metal hydride heating unit (1) which comprises a hydride-forming material so that heat is produced to warm the fuel cell. An independent claim is also included for a process for obtaining heat as above.
