The gas generator (13) for the passenger-side airbag is mounted in a housing (12) behind the front of the dashboard (10). The generator has a vertical axis and has perforations to allow gas to escape. The housing in the dashboard has a flat cover (11) which may swing open. The housing in the dashboard contains a deflector plate.
