PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve color reproducibility by correcting the color slurring particular for gray based on the polarization characteristics of the color filters in a color scanner. SOLUTION: Image data read by the color scanner are converted into C, M, Y color component data and predetermined image processing is applied thereto in an image processing part 10. In a control circuit 109 (illustrated as a CPU) of the image processing part 10, it is discriminated whether or not the color of said image data is gray from the density balance of respective C, M, Y color components. When the discriminated color is gray, the color correction using a first masking equation composed of a first correction coefficient corresponding to gray is applied to said image data and in the case of any color except for gray, the color correction using a second masking equation composed of a second correction coefficient corresponding to the color except for gray is applied to the image data.
