PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress harmful effect of vibration at a time of driving a torque source to valve characteristic control in an internal combustion engine provided with a variable valve mechanism adjusting valve characteristics by converting rotary motion to reciprocating motion and moving a control shaft 132 in an axial direction. SOLUTION: A torque output part 200 is arranged on a lateral wall 158 of a cam carrier 150 along a control shaft 132 and is fixed separately from a torque transmission mechanism 210. Vibration is not directly transmitted and a whole body of a variable valve system does not become long in an axial direction of the control shaft 132, thereby. Consequently, effect of vibration when an electric motor 204 drives is small, increase of amplitude or generation of resonance can be suppressed, and harmful effect to valve characteristic control can be suppressed. Since the whole body of the variable valve system can be shortened, a whole body of an engine does not become long and mountability on a vehicle or the like is improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
