PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform proper image processing in a short time and more easily. SOLUTION: An original document type automatic discriminating section 23 determines the ground region of an original image in a ground region determining section 12, and judges whether the read original image is a character original, a printed photographic original, a photographic paper photograph or an ink jet original or whether it is a character/printed photographic original or a character/photographic paper photograph in which the above originals are mixed, by using this determined ground region.
