PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the temperature control technique for a fixing unit which is suitable for an image forming apparatus variable of fixing temperature. SOLUTION: A target elevated temperature and a fixing allowable temperature that correspond to the set value of the fixing temperature are determined. To increase the temperature of a heat roller from an initial temperature T0 to the set value Tf1 of the fixing temperature, the target elevated temperature is set to Tp1. Also, a fixing operation is permitted at the time t1 when the temperature of the heat roller reached a fixing allowable temperature Te1. On the other hand, when the fixing temperature is set to a higher temperature Tf2, the target elevated temperature and the fixing allowable temperature are also altered to Tp2 and Te2, respectively.
