The invention relates to a bonnet which can pivot on rear mounted hinges. A latch (3) on the bonnet engages with a lock (1) which can slide vertically in guides (2). A sensor system is provided which senses the approach of an obstruction, e.g. a pedestrian. The sensor system releases the lock by releasing a retaining latch (10) electrically so that he bonnet lifts slightly, say 40 mm. On impact the bonnet/latch assembly moves downwards against a spring dampening the force of impact.
