<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a needle assembly shield having an ability for automatic performance in the middle of common blood collection procedures. <P>SOLUTION: A protective collection needle assembly for protecting needles based on the withdrawing of a tube includes a hub mounted on a needle cannula and a spring for energizing a telescoping shield mounted on the hub. The needle assembly can be engaged with a needle holder adapted to accommodate a blood collection tube. The needle assembly is mounted movably onto the hub when the collection tube is placed within the needle holder and includes a holding member which can be engaged with the telescoping shield. The holding member, when in engagement with the telescoping shield, prevents any further movement of the shield toward its complete extended position. The telescoping shield may move toward its complete extended position when the holding member is released from the telescoping shield following the removal of the collection tube. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
